President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Prof Ibrahim Gambari, former UN under secretary-general, as his chief of staff.
Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, announced the appointment of Gambari at the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.
The confirmation comes after about 24 hours of uncertainty over the appointment as both Presidential spokesmen refused to make any official statements even after several media outlets including TheNewsMatrics had reported the development citing high level sources.
Gambari replaces Abba Kyari who died on April 17 from COVID-19 complications.
The new chief of staff, who is from Kwara State, was the minister of external affairs from 1984 to 1985 under Buhari’s military regime.
He also served as the under secretary-general of the UN and special adviser to the secretary-general on Africa between 1999 and 2005.
His tenure is likely to also come under intense scrutiny as a rash of social media posts have started to surface suggesting a controversial mindset during his tenure as a senior diplomat during the military era.
