21 killed as gunmen attack Plateau communities


Gunmen reportedly killed 21 persons during an attack on Baton and Rayogot in Heipang, Barkin Ladi LGA of Plateau.

In a statement on Thursday, Rwang Tengwong, national publicity secretary of Berom Youth Movement (BYM), a socio-cultural group, said seven persons sustained injuries during the attack.

Tengwong said the gunmen invaded the two communities at about 1:26 am on Thursday.

“21 persons have been killed in an attack in two different villages in Heipang District of Barkin Ladi,” NAN quoted Tengwong as saying.

“The attackers, who came around 1:26 a.m, killed 17 persons at Batin in Heipang town while four others were killed at Rayogot.

“Seven other persons sustained various degrees of injuries.”

He called on the government and security agencies to intervene and stop the killings in the state.

When contacted, Alfred Alabo, police spokesperson in the state, said a statement would be released soon.

Earlier, Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau, inaugurated a security and Information center (SIC) to help residents report developments in their regions.

In recent weeks, many Plateau communities have been attacked and destroyed, while several residents have lost their lives to gunmen.
