The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of three more internet fraudsters arrested at a hotel within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.
Last week, operatives of the EFCC arrested 93 people suspected to be involved in internet fraud at a hotel within the precincts of the library.
Following the arrest, four of the suspects – Isaac Akinwale, Ibrahim Olatunji, Habeeb Oshundairo and Bisiriyu Abiodun – were convicted on August 15 for cybercrime-related offences.
On Monday, the federal high court sitting in Lagos convicted Adenekan Ayinde, Oyatokun Qudus, and Adisa Okikiade, who were among the 93 arrested during the raid.
They were arraigned on separate one-count charges bordering on impersonation, identity and internet fraud contrary to section 22 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015.
Dehinde Dipeolu, the presiding judge, convicted the four suspects after they pleaded guilty to various cybercrime offences.
Ayinde admitted to the charges and confirmed that he had restituted N200,000.
S.M. Yabo, the EFCC prosecutor, tendered an iPhone 14 Pro Max as evidence, which was admitted without objection from the defence.
The judge sentenced Ayinde to one month imprisonment with an option of a N300,000 fine.
Also, Qudus pleaded guilty and received the same sentence of one month’s imprisonment or a N300,000 fine.
Okikiade, who faced a one-count charge of impersonation, was also convicted and given the option of a fine.
