Maiden Ibru, publisher of The Guardian newspaper, has rated THISDAY newspaper as the best national daily in the country.
Ibru spoke on Monday while receiving the lifetime achievement award at THISDAY’s 30th Anniversary Awards. The newspaper was founded on January 22, 1995.
The awards ceremony held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. Among the attendees were governors, ministers, chieftains of political parties, and entrepreneurs.
In her acceptance speech, Ibru, who is also the chairman of The Guardian, encouraged THISDAY to continue the good work.
“I really appreciate this. It came as a shock. Thank you very much. Continue to do what you do at THISDAY,” she said.
“It is definitely the number one paper in the country. It is a fact. I’m the publisher and chairman of Guardian newspaper. THISDAY newspaper is the number one newspaper in Nigeria.”
Ibru’s comments elicited angry reactions on social media with many senior journalists asking that she step down for conceding such a position to an industry rival.
