Aminu Ado Bayero, the deposed Emir of Kano, has cancelled the Eid-el-Fitr durbar celebration in the city over security concerns.

Bayero made the announcement during a press briefing at the Nasarawa mini palace in Kano on Wednesday.

The deposed emir said respected religious leaders and stakeholders advised him to cancel the durbar for peace in the state.

He urged the people of the state to celebrate the sallah in peace and harmony.

A durbar is a festival held during Eid-el-Kabir and Eid-el-Fitri celebrations. It begins with prayers, followed by a parade of the emir and his entourage on horses.

On May 23, 2024, the Kano house of assembly passed the amended bill, which Abba Yusuf, the state governor, signed into law.

This paved the way for the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi as Emir of Kano. Bayero was dethroned as the emir.

Bayero had rejected the state government’s decision and took legal action to challenge his dethronement.

On March 14, the court of appeal temporarily suspended the enforcement of its own ruling, which had overturned a federal high court decision invalidating the Kano state government’s repeal of the 2019 Emirate Council Law.

The appellate court’s decision put a hold on its January 10 judgment, pending the outcome of an appeal filed at the supreme court.

Sanusi and Bayero are currently laying claim to the Emir of Kano throne.

Recently, Yusuf asked all four emirates in Kano to commence preparations for the sallah durbar and ensure that citizens and visitors enjoy the festive period to the fullest.

Subsequently, Bayero notified security agencies of plans to hold a durbar and commemorate his fifth year as the city’s monarch — a development that could have led to clashes between supporters of Sanusi and Bayero.
