In a landmark move to accelerate Nigeria’s digital and energy inclusion drive, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have inaugurated a joint collaboration committee focused on deploying renewable energy solutions to support telecom infrastructure across the country.
The formal inauguration of the NCC–REA Collaboration Committee took place on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the NCC Headquarters in Abuja. The event was presided over by the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, and the Managing Director of the REA, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, alongside senior officials and committee members from both organizations.

Describing the initiative as a strategic step towards bridging connectivity and power deficits in rural and underserved communities, Dr. Maida said the partnership represents an alignment of national development priorities.
“Whether it is powering a base station or enabling a child to access digital learning, this partnership has the potential to transform realities and bring opportunities closer to the people,” he stated.
Dr. Maida emphasized that the collaboration is not only about infrastructure but about enabling inclusive growth, reducing inequalities, and fostering shared prosperity. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring no community is left behind in Nigeria’s digital and energy transformation.
In his remarks, REA’s Managing Director, Mr. Aliyu, expressed confidence in the committee’s capacity to unlock sustainable development opportunities for millions of Nigerians beyond the reach of traditional infrastructure. He pledged REA’s full cooperation with the NCC to ensure the success of the joint effort.
The newly inaugurated committee is tasked with developing and implementing integrated strategies that leverage renewable energy to power telecom sites. The initiative includes sharing geospatial data for improved planning, aligning funding mechanisms, and establishing performance indicators to measure socio-economic impacts.
The NCC–REA Committee is expected to serve as a model of inter-agency cooperation and drive progress in alignment with Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan and sustainable development goals.
