John Odigie-Oyegun, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had a slip of the tongue on Tuesday while speaking at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national convention in Abuja.

After mounting the podium, Oyegun, who defected to the ADC in 2025, shouted “APC” before catching himself, mid-sentence and correcting to “ADC.”

After the gaffe, the former governor of Edo said, “No, no, did I just say APC?”

The slip triggered laughter from delegates.

Dino Melaye, former Kogi senator, interjected, saying, “Baba, you need to seek refuge from the devil.”

Oyegun, playing along with the light-hearted moment, replied that he would require a strong “purgative” to flush out the lingering APC reflex from his system.

A video of the slip has amassed nearly 100,000 views on social media within hours.

Oyegun, who served as APC national chairman from 2014 to 2018 after steering the party’s formation, has become one of the most visible leaders in the ADC following his defection.

He has since chaired key committees, including the party’s manifesto drafting team, and repeatedly positioned the ADC as a credible alternative to the ruling APC.

Earlier during the convention, Oyegun said the ADC is ready to oust President Bola Tinubu and take over Aso Rock after the 2027 general election.

“We are the largest black nation on the face of this earth. God designed that for a purpose, but see what we have done to it,” he said.

“And so, I am so thrilled when I look at our chairman and I look at the leaders around him, and I say, ‘Thank God we are ready for this struggle, and thank God we are ready to move.

“We are ready to take over Aso Rock, and it is not going to be business as usual. I want everybody to know that because they keep accusing us that John, you were part of them.”
