The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has responded to calls for refunds from candidates who incurred charges while attempting to check results of the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted on Friday, April 17.

On Saturday, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson, said in a post on X that the results would be released before midnight.

“Follow me for prompt updates as soon as the results are officially released,” he wrote.

However, in a subsequent post on Sunday, Benjamin apologised after the board failed to meet the earlier timeline.

“Our Chief Executive was unavailable due to an important engagement but would be in the office today, and we assure you that the results will be released later today, surely before nightfall,” he said.

“We also extend our heartfelt apologies to those who stayed up waiting for the release. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Despite the assurance, some candidates reported that they made multiple attempts to check their results, incurring charges in the process.

When contacted, Benjamin said the release of examination results is a sensitive process that cannot be delegated.

He added that Ishaq Oloyede, the JAMB registrar, had been in Lagos for an engagement but had since returned to Abuja, assuring that the results would be released soon.

The JAMB spokesperson, however, dismissed calls for refunds, arguing that the board did not officially announce that the results had been released.

“Result is a very sensitive matter. It’s not something he can delegate. But he is back now. We are going to release the result soon,” he said.

“Why would you say they deduct money for something that has not been released? When we release results, we will tell Nigerians. So what refunds are you talking about? If they check, how is that supposed to be our business?”

On Sunday evening, Benjamin reiterated in another post on X that the results for the Friday examination would be released within hours.
