Goods destroyed as fire razes three buildings in Lagos market

Fire has razed three buildings at the intersection of Nnamdi Azikiwe and Docemo in the Idumota area of Lagos Island.

The fire incident reportedly started around 7 am on Wednesday.

The fire mainly affected three buildings around the Idumota market — two 2-storey buildings and a three-storey building.

TheNewsMatrics gathered that the fire destroyed many shops and warehouses containing goods including textiles and clothing worth millions of naira.

In a statement, Margaret Adeseye, director of the state rescue service, said the agency is yet to ascertain the casualty toll and the cause of the fire incident.

She said firefighters have been mobilised to the scene to help curtail the spread of the inferno.

“Upon arrival at 07:58 hours, it was discovered that the fire encompasses three buildings, including two 2-storey structures and one three-storey building,” the statement reads.

“Currently, firefighting efforts are underway at the scene.

“The fire stations at Ebute Elefun, Ilupeju and Alausa have deployed resources to mitigate the situation effectively as firefighting operations are ongoing.

“The cause of the Fire is yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing. Casualties have not been confirmed at this time.”
