The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to overcoming challenges hindering the growth of the telecommunications sector and expanding connectivity across the country. Speaking at the opening of the Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) Protection and Resilience Workshop, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing these obstacles.
The workshop, organized by the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NCCC) under the Office of the National Security Adviser, provided a platform for policymakers and sector regulators to explore strategies for safeguarding telecom infrastructure and improving network resilience.
Dr. Maida highlighted the sector’s progress and potential, noting that while challenges like vandalism and fibre cuts persist, the industry remains a vital driver of Nigeria’s digital economy. “Despite frequent fibre cuts and vandalism, we are determined to connect more Nigerians and build a robust digital ecosystem,” he stated.
A significant issue raised was the denial of access to telecom facilities by property owners, communities, and some government entities. Dr. Maida revealed that in 2023 alone, over 20,000 cases of site access denial were recorded, slowing network expansion and maintenance efforts.
However, the NCC remains optimistic about resolving these challenges. “Through partnerships with stakeholders and the implementation of forward-thinking policies, we are confident in our ability to overcome these barriers and accelerate connectivity for all Nigerians,” Dr. Maida assured.
The NCC’s proactive approach includes advocating for policies that protect telecom infrastructure as critical national assets and fostering collaboration between telecom operators, communities, and government bodies. These efforts aim to ensure uninterrupted service delivery and enhance the quality of telecom services nationwide.
With initiatives like this workshop and a steadfast commitment to innovation, the NCC continues to pave the way for a connected Nigeria, driving economic growth and fostering digital inclusion for millions of citizens.
