The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has underscored the pivotal role of corporate governance in driving the success and sustainability of Nigeria’s telecom industry. Speaking at the 2024 Annual Corporate Governance Conference, Maida highlighted the transformative impact of strong governance frameworks on the sector’s growth and resilience.

Delivering a keynote address titled “Corporate Survival and Sustainability—The New Face of Governance in the Nigerian Telecoms Sector”, Dr. Maida described corporate governance as more than a regulatory requirement. “It is the foundation of the telecom industry’s success and sustainability,” he stated.

Reflecting on the telecom industry’s remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Dr. Maida emphasized the importance of governance that goes beyond compliance. “Survival and sustainability are no longer optional—they’re essential for corporate success,” he said, adding that companies must navigate rising regulatory, environmental, and societal pressures with innovative and adaptive governance practices.

Dr. Maida called for a shift in perspective, urging industry leaders to adopt governance frameworks that build trust, foster innovation, and create long-term value. He also stressed the need for corporate governance to become a deeply ingrained culture within organizations.

“At the Nigerian Communications Commission, we see good corporate governance as more than a checklist; it must be a culture ingrained at every level of an organization,” Dr. Maida affirmed.

This forward-thinking approach is expected to not only solidify the industry’s resilience in a rapidly changing global landscape but also inspire confidence among stakeholders, ensuring the continued growth and relevance of Nigeria’s telecom sector.
