Alhassan Yahaya, Bimbo Oyetunde emerge new NUJ President, deputy

Comrade Alhassan Yahaya from Gombe State has emerged as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists. (NUJ).

He clinched the position on Wednesday night during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Alhassan, who was the immediate past National Deputy President of the union, defeated his closest rival, incumbent Treasurer, Dele Atunbi after delegates’ votes were counted.

He garnered 436 votes to achieve the feat, while Atunbi and Mohammed Garba who came second and third scored 97 and 39 votes respectively.

Also, a Deputy Director with Radio Nigeria, Mrs. Abimbola Oyetunde emerged as the Deputy National President of the union unopposed while Mrs Ronke Afebioye Samo from Ekiti State Council was re-elected unopposed as the Vice President Zone B.

Other National Officers of the Union including the National Treasurer, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, who was the former Abia State Council Chairman were returned unopposed.

The election, which was conducted amidst tight security had Comrade Mike Ikeogwu as the Chairman of the electoral Committee and was presided over by the Representative of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.

Prior to his emergence as the President of NUJ, Alhassan Yahaya was a former Council Chairman of the Gombe State chapter of the union.
