The UNESCO World Philosophy Day was first globally celebrated on November 21, 2002.

UNESCO believes that World Philosophy Day is worthy of celebration each year because of the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought for every culture and each individual.

According to UNESCO’s General Conference, “Philosophy is a discipline that encourages critical and independent thought and is capable of working towards a better understanding of the world and promoting tolerance and peace.”

Prof Ifechi Ndianefoo who is widely celebrated for his mastery of the works of lionized philosophers such as Karl Popper alongside deep-thinking columnists and public intellectuals agrees with UNESCO that the institutionalization of the World Philosophy Day will lend the necessary impetus to the teaching of philosophy all over the world.
