The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, has called for a robust and unified approach to fortify Nigeria’s telecommunications sector against mounting cyber threats.
Speaking at the 2024 Cybersecurity Conference held in Abuja, Dr. Maida emphasized the urgency of safeguarding the nation’s critical telecom infrastructure, warning that neglecting cybersecurity could have dire consequences for Nigeria’s socio-economic stability.
“Our telecommunications infrastructure is not just a critical national asset—it is a key driver of economic growth. Securing this infrastructure against cyber threats is a collective responsibility,” Maida declared.
Highlighting the rising sophistication of global cyberattacks, the NCC chief called for proactive measures, urging stakeholders across government, industry, and the private sector to collaborate in addressing vulnerabilities.
“We must not underestimate the power of partnership. Through collective action, information-sharing, and joint efforts, we can build a resilient telecom ecosystem capable of withstanding cyber threats,” he said.
The conference brought together top industry experts, government officials, and private sector leaders to discuss comprehensive strategies for tackling cybersecurity risks in Nigeria’s telecom industry. Discussions centered on fostering collaboration, implementing advanced security measures, and enhancing the country’s readiness to combat digital threats.
As cyberattacks continue to rise globally, Dr. Maida’s call underscores the critical need for Nigeria to prioritise cybersecurity as a national imperative.
