A 31-year-old woman, Ajayi Esther, has been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a man of N607,500 under the pretense of marrying him.
The police charged Esther with fraud, impersonation, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
According to the prosecution, she deceived the complainant, Ajayi Oluwabusuyi, by claiming to be single and accepting money from him for an engagement ceremony she never intended to honor.
Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, the prosecutor, told the court that the defendant also falsely presented herself as a teacher at Egiri Oke Comprehensive School in Iyin-Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area.
The charges, Adeniyi stated, violate Sections 186, 393, and 181(1)(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
Esther pleaded not guilty to the charges, and her counsel, Mrs. Joy Raphael, requested bail, assuring the court of her client’s cooperation.
Chief Magistrate Dolamu Babalogbon granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. The case was adjourned to March 5 for further hearing.
