The senate has constituted an 18-member committee to oversee the activities of Ibok-Ete Ibas, the sole administrator of Rivers state.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the development during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Akpabio said the move was aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in the governance of Rivers state.

He described the committee’s mandate as critical to ensuring effective legislative oversight.

“The committee must immediately commence its oversight functions in Rivers,” Akpabio said.

He noted that the composition of the committee might be reviewed after further consultations.

Opeyemi Bamidele, the senate leader, was named chairman of the committee, with Adamu Aliero (Kebbi), Osita Izunaso (Imo), Osita Ngwu (Enugu), Kaka Shehu (Borno), Aminu Abass (Adamawa), Tokunbo Abiru (Lagos) and Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo) as members.

Other members of the committee are Sani Musa (Niger), Simon Lalong (Plateau), Asuquo Ekpeyong (Cross River), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Ireti Kingibe (FCT), Onyekachi Nwebonyi (Ebonyi), Idiat Adebule (Lagos), Ede Dafinone (Delta) and Mohammed Nakudu (Jigawa), as well as the clerk of the senate.

Akpabio said the assignment was “urgent” and urged the committee to get to work immediately.

He also reaffirmed the senate’s commitment to upholding democratic principles in Rivers state.

On April 15, the house of representatives inaugurated a 21-member ad hoc committee to oversee the emergency rule in Rivers state.

Speaking at the inauguration, Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house, said the move indicates the parliament’s “dedication to transparent governance and the rule of law in our country”.
