Tinubu departs Abuja for Turkey state visit today

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja today (Monday) for a state visit to Turkey.

In a statement on Sunday, Bayo Onanuga, presidential spokesperson, said the “visit is aimed at strengthening the existing cordial relations between the two countries and exploring further areas of cooperation in security, education, social development, innovation, and aviation”.

Onanuga noted that finance, communication, trade and investment would dominate political and diplomatic discussions between both countries during Tinubu’s visit.

He added that Nigeria and Turkey would also sign memoranda of understanding (MoUs) in scientific research, energy, technical cooperation, media and communications, military cooperation and protocol.

“A business forum will bring together investors from both countries to explore areas of interest during the visit,” he said.

Turkish President Recep Erdogan visited Nigeria from October 19 to 20, 2021.

This is Tinubu’s first visit to Turkey as Nigeria’s president.

A delegation, including Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs; Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and minister of justice; Christopher Musa, minister of defence; and Jimi Benson, chairman, house committee on defence, will accompany the president on the visit.

Others include Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, minister of women affairs and social development; Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior; Hannatu Musawa, minister of culture and creative economy; Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA); and Mohammed Mohammed, director-general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

Onanuga did not indicate date Tinubu is expected back in the country, noted that he would return at the conclusion of his visit.
