Iran says it will completely close the Strait of Hormuz if United States President Donald Trump carries out his threat to bomb Tehran’s power plants.

On Saturday, Trump said he would “hit and obliterate” Iranian power plants – “starting with the biggest one first” – if the critical waterway was not fully open to shipping within 48 hours.

The ultimatum came a day after the president said he was considering “winding down” military operations following three weeks of conflict, even as thousands of additional US troops were deployed to the Middle East.

In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement warning that Iran would completely shut the Strait of Hormuz if the US president carried out his threats.

The IRGC said companies with US shares will be “completely destroyed” if Iranian energy facilities are targeted.

The “power plants of regional countries hosting US bases will be legitimate targets for us”, the IRGC added.

On Sunday, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said the waterway was “open to all except those who violate our soil”.

Abbas Araghchi, foreign affairs minister, has also said Tehran had imposed restrictions only on vessels from countries involved in attacks against Iran and would assist others that stayed out of the conflict.

So far, Indian-flagged ships have been reported to negotiate safe passage through the strait.
