Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, says Aminu Gwarzo, his former deputy, attempted to remove him from office.

Yusuf spoke on Thursday when he hosted a group of supporters known as Mawallafan Abba Gida Gida at the government house in Kano.

Yusuf said Gwarzo did not notify him of his resignation before exiting his cabinet, adding that he had done nothing to warrant such treatment.

“Today, the deputy governor who came with us on the same ticket is no longer with us,” he said.

“Nobody offended him. In fact, I have not even seen his resignation letter. What concerns me about it? Whatever made him act that way was an attempt to remove me and take the position, but God did not allow it.”

Gwarzo resigned as the deputy governor of Kano on March 27.

Days before his resignation, the Kano state house of assembly moved to impeach him over alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial malfeasance.

A month before initiating impeachment proceedings, the state legislature dismissed reports of a plot to remove Gwarzo over his alleged refusal to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Yusuf, members of his cabinet, and the state lawmakers defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the APC in January.

Gwarzo, who is an ally of Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano, was received into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) last week.
