A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa has suspended former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of causing disunity in the party.

The ADC faction also suspended Babachir Lawal, former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), and Sadiq Ibrahim, the party’s transition committee chairman.

Raji Zumo, the factional ADC chairman in Adamawa, announced the suspension of the politicians during a press conference on Monday in Yola, the state capital.

“Let it be clearly stated, no individual, regardless of his status or influence, is above the law or the constitution of the African Democratic Congress, as long as he is a card-carrying member of the party,” Zumo said.

“The African Democratic Congress is built on discipline, justice, and the supremacy of law. In view of the foregoing and after executive consultation, the leadership of the ADC in Adamawa state hereby announces the immediate suspension of the following individuals from the party.

“Those individuals are suspended for their roles in fostering disunity, creating parallel structures, undermining lawful authority, and disregarding a subsisting court order.

“This action is taken in the best interest of the party to restore order, protect its dignity, and reaffirm our commitment to democratic values.”

Since July 2025, when an opposition coalition took over the ADC’s leadership, the party has been embroiled in internal disputes, with Nafiu Bala, a former deputy national chairman, alleging that the David Mark-led leadership was illegally appointed as the national chairman.

On April 1, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) derecognised Mark-led faction following an interim ruling of the court of appeal.

The supreme court has fixed Tuesday for the hearing of an appeal filed by Mark against a suit instituted by Bala, challenging his leadership.
