President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the 2027 governorship aspiration of Obafemi Hamzat, deputy governor of Lagos.

In a post on Wednesday, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, said Tinubu gave the endorsement during a meeting with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council (GAC) at the State House, Abuja.

“President Tinubu formally endorses the Lagos APC consensus governorship candidate Obafemi Hamzat at a meeting with members of the Lagos Governance Advisory Council, led by Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” Onanuga wrote.

In one of the photographs shared by Onanuga, Tinubu and Hamzat are seen holding the nomination form, with Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, standing beside the president, while Tajudeen Olusi, GAC leader, stands next to the deputy governor.

Other leaders present at the meeting included Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff (CoS) to the president; Tokunbo Abiru, senator representing Lagos east; and Musiliu Obanikoro, former minister of state for defence.

The development comes less than 48 hours after Sanwo-Olu endorsed Hamzat as his preferred successor.

At a meeting with party leaders held at the Lagos House, Alausa, on Monday, Sanwo-Olu declared support for Hamzat, describing him as the “best man for the job”.

At the end of the meeting, the governor embraced his deputy and raised his hand before party leaders in a symbolic gesture that drew applause.

The following day, the GAC, the apex leadership body of the APC in Lagos, also endorsed Hamzat as the consensus candidate for the forthcoming governorship election.

Speaking after a meeting at Lagos House, Marina, the GAC leader said members of the council had unanimously agreed to back Hamzat’s candidacy.
