Iyabo Obasanjo, former Ogun central senator, is set to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Multiple sources close to the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo told TheCable that she has communicated her decision to key associates in the opposition party.

“I can confirm that Senator Iyabo Obasanjo is moving to the PDP,” the source said.

“Her political focus is firmly on Ogun state and the future direction of its governance.”

Insiders said plans are being finalised for Iyabo and Oladipupo Adebutu, a former federal lawmaker, to hold a rally on June 16 at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

“I am informed that while it may take that route, the plan is for a joint Obasanjo/Adebutu rally, involving the senate and governorship campaigns,” the source said.

The former Ogun health commissioner was elected to the senate in April 2007 on the platform of the PDP,

Iyabo, who served as chairperson of the senate’s health committee, failed to win her reelection bid in 2011.

The former senator recently resigned from the APC — two months after losing the party’s governorship ticket in Ogun state.

Shortly after joining the APC in February 2026, she declared her interest in the governorship race but later suspended her bid after the party adopted Solomon Adeola, senator representing Ogun west, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 election.

In her resignation notice, she accused the party leadership of persistent disrespect, alleging that agreements reached were breached.

Iyabo said some of her supporters were maltreated and prevented from accessing the venue where the consensus arrangement was formalised.
