A dramatic 92nd-minute strike from Stephen Eustaquio broke South African hearts as Canada secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Los Angeles Stadium to book their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tightly contested round of 32 encounter appeared destined for extra time before Eustaquio fired home the winner in stoppage time.

Both nations were making historical appearances in the men’s World Cup knockout stages. Canada looked more dangerous in the first half but found Bafana Bafana’s defence exceptionally resolute.

Derek Cornelius missed a glorious point-blank opportunity early on, heading a cross straight at Ronwen Williams. Shortly before the break, Moise Bombito thought he had opened the scoring with a powerful downward header, only for South Africa’s Aubrey Modiba to make a stunning goal-line clearance.

Hugo Broos, Bafana Bafana head coach, structured his side defensively to absorb intense pressure. Oswin Appollis occasionally caused trouble on the counter, but Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau stood firm whenever tested.

The introduction of Alphonso Davies from the bench in the 75th minute completely transformed Canada’s attacking dynamic. Davies, who had been dealing with a hamstring injury, immediately added directness and intensity to the co-hosts’ frontline.

As the game trickled into five minutes of added time, Canada capitalised on a half-cleared cross. The ball fell cleanly to Eustaquio right on the edge of the box. The midfielder took a brilliant first touch before rifling a precise, low shot into the bottom-left corner, leaving Williams with no chance.

With this victory, Canada marches on to the round of 16, where they will face the winner of the highly anticipated clash between the Netherlands and Morocco in Houston on July 4.
