Fifteen years after Tony Elumelu lent him $1 million of his own money to help rescue a struggling business, Afrinvest Group Managing Director Ike Chioke has repaid the loan in full and sent his benefactor a public-spirited thank-you.

In a letter dated October 14, 2026, and addressed to Elumelu, chairman of Heirs Holdings, Chioke said the final settlement was made in June. He called the 2011 loan “an extraordinary act of friendship, trust and generosity.”

Chioke recalled that Afrinvest was then going through one of the hardest periods in its history, struggling to rebuild and recapitalise after the global financial crisis. Elumelu’s decision to lend at that moment, he wrote, showed confidence not only in the business but in him personally, including his integrity and determination, and his belief that the firm could emerge stronger.

That belief has been borne out, according to the letter. Afrinvest has since grown into a diversified financial services group that serves a widening range of clients and contributes to the development of Nigeria’s capital markets. “Your faith in me, and in what we were trying to build, has been vindicated,” Chioke wrote.

He said he was “genuinely touched” by Elumelu’s delight when told in June that the debt would finally be cleared. For Chioke, the repayment was about more than money: it was about honouring a commitment to someone who believed in him “when that belief mattered most.”

While the financial obligation is discharged, he wrote, “the debt of gratitude I owe you will endure.”

Chioke also linked his own story to the philosophy behind the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which aims to “democratise luck” by giving African entrepreneurs access to capital, mentorship and opportunity.

He described himself as an early beneficiary of that approach, noting that Elumelu’s help came long before the Foundation began supporting thousands of entrepreneurs across the continent. In his view, it shows “the multiplier effect of generosity, and the enduring value of investing in people.”

Chioke stressd that he remains proud of what Afrinvest has achieved and wished Elumelu, his family and the Foundation’s work God’s continued blessing.
