The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested and detained cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye aka Bobrisky, over abuse of naira, spraying of naira notes and currency mutilation.
The crossdresser, who has been at the centre of many controversies over the past weeks, was arrested in Lagos on Wednesday and has since been detained at the Lagos Command of the EFCC.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, said Bobrisky was arrested at Pinnock Estate in Lagos State at about 3 pm, for alleged spraying of the naira, currency mutilation and abuse of the naira.
Dele Oyewale noted that the 32-year-old would be charged to court.
Oyewale said, “Bobrisky is with us. He was arrested last night in Lagos, and he is at our Lagos command. We arrested him for alleged abuse of naira notes, spraying of naira notes, and currency mutilation, among others.
“We are very serious about restoring the dignity of the naira. Though our investigation is still ongoing, but he will definitely be charged to court soon.”
Recall that Bobrisky had been in the news amid recent discussions regarding the legality of cross-dressing in Nigeria, with the Police spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, expressing the complexity surrounding the issue as no law is against cross-dressing in Nigeria.
Speaking with Channels TV on Tuesday, Olumuyiwa Adejobi said crossdressers cannot be arrested because it is a dicey situation.
He said cross-dressing is not yet a punishable offence in Nigeria.
He also stated that even if there might be allegations of people who cross-dress also being a part of the LGBTQ community, there is no specific evidence to back that up, hence they cannot take them to court.
Bobrisky had always defended his lifestyle choices in response to criticism, emphasising individual freedom of choice and urging others to mind their own business.
The controversial crossdresser made headlines in March when he was announced as the best-dressed female at actress Eniola Ajao’s movie premiere.
The announcement shocked many who questioned why a crossdresser was awarded the best-dressed prize in female category.
Controversial singer Portable released a diss track mock Bobrisky after the so called award which Ajao later said was a stunt to attract attention to her movie.
