Vice-President Kashim Shettima has directed the deployment of resources to Jigawa state following a tanker explosion which claimed 140 lives.
Stanley Nkwocha, senior special assistant to the president on media and communications, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
The vice-president expressed sadness over the incident and urged Nigerians to observe road safety measures.
He further directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deploy its personnel to Jigawa state.
“My heart aches for those who have had their families torn apart by this disaster,” Shettima said.
“This devastating incident has shaken us all to our core. The federal government stands with the people of Jigawa.
“We are mobilising all necessary resources to support the injured and assist the families affected by this calamity.
“As we contend with this tragedy, let us also reflect on the importance of safety measures and public awareness to prevent such incidents in the future.
“Every life is precious, and we must do all we can to protect our citizens.”
He commended first responders and medical personnel for their efforts, stating that their dedication “exemplifies the best of our nation’s spirit”.
On October 11, Shettima inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NaRSAC) to set strategies aligned with global best practices in reducing traffic crashes.
He tasked the council to effect coordination among federal, state, and local governments to achieve shared road safety objectives.
