Bathtub to World Cup final: Messi, Yamal set for football’s most remarkable full-circle moment

Few stories capture the romance of football quite like this.

Nineteen years after a young Lionel Messi gently bathed six-month-old Lamine Yamal during a UNICEF charity photoshoot, the two football stars could meet as rivals in the biggest match of all—the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

The remarkable twist of fate is now within touching distance after Spain booked their place in Sunday’s final at the New York New Jersey Stadium. All that stands in the way is Argentina’s semi-final clash with England. Victory for the defending champions would set up an emotional showdown between the sport’s greatest icon and the teenager widely regarded as his heir.

The photograph, taken in December 2007 for a UNICEF charity calendar organised by Spanish newspaper Diario Sport, has become one of football’s most cherished images. Then just 20 and beginning his rise to global superstardom, Messi is seen carefully giving baby Yamal a bubble bath after the youngster’s family won a raffle to participate in the charity project.

Nearly two decades later, the image has resurfaced around the world as football fans marvel at the possibility of the pair sharing the same pitch on the sport’s grandest stage.

Yamal, who celebrated his 19th birthday only days before inspiring Spain to victory over France in the semi-finals, admitted the prospect would be special.

“Yes, I’ve grown a little and I think Leo has too,” the Barcelona winger joked when shown the famous photograph during a press conference.

“I hope it happens. I’d love to face Messi in a World Cup final.”

For Messi, 39, the occasion would carry added emotion. The Argentine captain has already indicated that this tournament will be his final World Cup, offering one last opportunity to add another chapter to an extraordinary career that includes a World Cup title, multiple UEFA Champions League crowns and a record collection of Ballon d’Or awards.

For Yamal, it would represent another milestone in a meteoric rise that has redefined expectations of teenage footballers.

The Barcelona sensation became the youngest player to debut and score for both the Spanish club and the national team, earning comparisons with Messi because of his dazzling left foot, fearless dribbling and maturity beyond his years.

Yet behind his rapid ascent lies a story rooted in humility.

Born to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother, Yamal wears the names “Lamine” and “Yamal” on his shirt not because they are his family surname, but in honour of two people who financially supported his parents during difficult times after his birth. His family promised that if they had a son, he would carry both names as a lasting expression of gratitude.

He also celebrates every goal by signalling the numbers “304” with his fingers—a tribute to the final digits of the postcode of his childhood neighbourhood, where his football dream began.

Yamal joined local club La Torreta at the age of four before Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy spotted his extraordinary talent two years later. Since then, he has become one of world football’s brightest young stars.

Should Argentina overcome England, football fans will witness far more than a World Cup final.

It would be the symbolic passing of the torch—from the legend who once cradled a baby in a bathtub for charity to the young superstar now ready to challenge him on the world’s biggest football stage.

Sometimes, football writes stories no scriptwriter could imagine.
