President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, describing him as “a brother in purpose” whose unwavering commitment to public service, democracy and responsible leadership has inspired generations of Nigerians.

In a heartfelt birthday message released on Wednesday, the President reflected on his long-standing friendship with the veteran journalist and politician, saying their relationship spanned decades of shared struggles, political campaigns and a common vision for a better Nigeria.
Tinubu said although they entered public life through different paths, they were united by the belief that Nigeria could be governed with competence, respect for institutions and a firm commitment to improving the lives of citizens.
“I have known Aremo Chief Olusegun Osoba for so many years that we could easily write a book about one another,” the President said. “Behind the titles, the pen and the politics stands a man whose first instinct is always to serve.”
The President recalled years of working alongside Osoba through “challenging campaigns, late-night strategy sessions over hot pepper soup” and engagements with the media, saying they remained steadfast in speaking the truth even when it was difficult.
Tinubu praised Osoba’s enduring commitment to democratic values, noting that the former governor consistently championed true federalism, press freedom balanced with responsibility, and accessible leadership.
He highlighted Osoba’s distinguished career in journalism, describing him as a mentor who always encouraged younger reporters to focus on the human impact of their stories.
According to the President, Osoba would often remind political strategists that beyond electoral victories, governance must ultimately improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians, including newspaper vendors, teachers and other citizens.
Reflecting on their shared political journey, Tinubu said Osoba’s calm disposition and wealth of historical knowledge had often provided guidance during difficult periods.
“He reminds you that we are part of a longer story and that we do not have to get everything right today, but we must not get the important things wrong,” he said.
The President also commended Osoba’s integrity and consistency, describing him as a leader whose public and private conduct reflected the same values of humility, courtesy and principle.
He said Osoba remained thoughtful in his relationships, often checking on the wellbeing of others before discussing official matters and maintaining respect even when disagreements arose.
Extending his birthday wishes, Tinubu prayed for the former governor’s good health and many more years of service.
He expressed the hope that Osoba would continue to witness the realisation of the ideals they had long championed, including quality education, durable infrastructure and a government that remains accountable to the people.
“Aremo, thank you for being a brother in purpose. Thank you for the counsel, your laughter, and for the reminder that leadership without character is worthless,” the President said.
He concluded by wishing the elder statesman peace in the new year and expressed optimism that they would continue working together in advancing Nigeria’s development.
