The Governing Council of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has set up a nine-member panel to investigate allegations of sexual harassment leveled against the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina.
According to the University Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mufutau Ibrahim, the decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the Council held on Friday, January 24, 2025.
The institution’s spokesperson said the allegations surfaced following the publication of audio recordings by online platforms – Foundation for Investigative Journalism and Sahara Reporters – in which Prof. Fasina was accused of sexually harassing Engr. Mrs. Folashade Adebayo, a Deputy Director of Works at the institution.
“The Governing Council extensively deliberated on the issues and expressed concern that the Federal University Oye-Ekiti has recently been in the news for negative reasons, overshadowing the university’s remarkable achievements,” Ibrahim disclosed in a statement.
To address the situation, the Council constituted a panel to conduct a thorough investigation and deliver its findings within three weeks.
The nine-member panel is tasked to: “Investigate the origin of the viral audio recordings alleging immoral behavior by the Vice-Chancellor and claims about the sale of the positions of Bursar and Registrar.
“Determine the motive behind the recordings and how they gained traction on social media.
“Examine the allegations made by Engr. Adebayo, particularly those of sexual harassment, and review prior efforts by the police, the immediate past Council Chairman, and others in addressing the accusations.
“Investigate any other matters related to the allegations.”
The Council assured the university community and the public that the findings of the panel would be considered at its next meeting, scheduled for the third week of February 2025.
“The Council is committed to ensuring justice and fairness in this matter and reiterates that there will be no sacred cows,” the statement added.
